The second day of the festival arrives even more filled with events and screenings. From today until the end of the festival, wake up with a morning yoga session with a well-known yoga teacher from Zagreb, which take place in the fresh air at 10:00, at the Cinema on the Slope (Sanjkalište).
We start our film day at the White Cinema at 10:30, with the great animated title The Peasants, of directing duo Hugh Welchman and DK Welchman. The creators of the award-winning animated film Loving Vincent (2017) return with the story of a young girl, Jagna, who defies the social norms of the 19th century.
The student film screenings of the CDFG Campus start at 11:00 at the Circus Fellini cinema, a program showcasing a number of film academies in the coming days. Today we watch films from VERN University (Zagreb), Screen Academy Scotland (Edinburgh Napier University) and the University of the Arts in Berlin (UdK).
If you’re in the mood for something playful, join us at 12:30 at the Cinema on the Slope for a game of Danish Kongespil, also known as the Vikings’ game, which many describe as a mixture of bocce and throwing horseshoes. After the game, we’re in for a conversation with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark, Ole Henrik Frijs-Madsen, about the current topic of sustainable, green tourism.
At 13:00 at the White Cinema, watch the film Animal, directed by Sofia Exarchou, running for the main festival prize, the Cinehill Propeller.
At 13:30, catch the Brazilian film The Second Mother directed by Anna Muylaert, on at the Cirkus Fellini cinema.
After lunch, stop by CineChill, for the program Read This! which starts at 14:30, devoted to the writers who marked the year with their works. Writers Milan Majerović-Stiljnović and Stanislav Habjan break the ice on the first day.
At 15:30 come to Cirkus Fellini for screenings of Stipe Božić’s two films, Reticent Wall and Taklamakan. After the screening, listen to a conversation with this famous alpinist and filmmaker at the CineChill zone.
At the same time, one of the most important European films of this season, Green Border, is screening at the White Cinema. The latest film by Agnieszka Holland, a vocal advocate of democracy and human rights, caused controversy among Polish conservative politicians and drove audiences to cinemas, winning the Special Jury Prize in Venice.
All those who stay in the city are in for a real cinematic treat. Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, inspired by the novel of the same name by Martin Amis, is shown at the Radnički dom cinema in Delnice at 16:30. Zone of Interest is one of the films that marked the year 2023: the film won the Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI critics’ prize at the Cannes festival, Oscars for best international film and sound, and was on almost every must-see lists of the year.
At 18:00 at the White Cinema, watch the Italian-Croatian production Denni and Sergio competing for the Cinehill Propeller main prize. Stay until the end because the screening is followed by a conversation with director Gianluca Santoni.
Alternatively, watch a selection of shorts from around the world in the program block End of Summer at Cirkus Fellini at 18:30 p.m.
Since the summer isn’t nearly over yet, come to Vidikovac at 19:00 for a toast to the sunset and the most beautiful view. Free tasting of mountain brandy and wine is offered every day. At 20:00 head over to Cirkus Fellini for the Vel Vet Vel__Festival Film, directed by Miha Možina, or to Fužine for the screening of Rajko Grlić’s cult classic In the Jaws of Life, which will be attended by the great actor Bogdan Diklić, winner of the 50 Years Award, and quiz host Morana Zibar.
The evening program kicks off at Krešo Golik Square at 8:35 p.m., with the crew of the film Frka lighting the second festival bonfire of the year. Svebor Mihael Jelić and his crew created a sensation in 2020 with the film Zagreb Equinox, while his latest film Frka, packed with a series of new crazy adventures, is on at the Cinema on the Slope at 23:30.
After the ritual lighting of the bonfire, at the Cinema on the Slope, at 21:00, we’re showing a film about a dangerous love triangle, Motel Destino, created by one of the most successful Brazilian directors, Karim Aïnouz, who is also a guest at the festival. After that, at the same location, go back in time with an animated film in which memories of a childhood in Split in the 1980s are brought to life by Veljko and Milivoj Popović in the title Žarko, You Will Spoil the Child! based on the book U malu je uša đava by Tisja Kljaković Braić.
After the various screenings of the day, relax and dance at Krešo Golik Square, rocking to the sound of the Velvet Festival DJ set from 1:30 until the morning. Entrance is free.
