Celebrated Iranian director Jafar Panahi is presented with one of two Cinehill’s honorary Maverick Awards, which rounds off a series of recognitions for authors who have pushed the boundaries of cinematic expression. Jafar Panahi is one of the greatest living directors and winner of major awards at all the world’s major film festivals. In an emotional speech, Panahi expressed his delight with the beauty of Croatia and the uniqueness of Fužine, pointing out that he will forever remember the friendliness and familiarity experienced at the festival.
“Thank you, I hope I deserved this”, he modestly said, thanking the organisers. He dedicated the award to the Iranian people who are fighting for freedom. Cinehill director Igor Mirković highlighted Panahi as one of the greatest directors of today. “This award is bestowed on filmmakers with a strong artistic, political and personal individuality”, Mirković said, recalling the time when Panahi was president of the Jury in Exile at this festival, while under house arrest in Iran.
“For years, we have wanted him to join us at the festival in person, and he is finally here on this stage”, Mirković added. The audience greeted Panahi with a long applause, and then watched his latest feature It Was Just an Accident, which won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
