The superintendent of the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig want to create an idyllic life for their family in the house and beautiful garden located right next to the camp. The Zone of Interest is one of the films that marked 2023: it won the Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes, Oscars for Best International Feature and for Sound, and found its place on almost every ‘best films of the year’ list. Inspired by Martin Amis’ eponymous novel, Jonathan Glazer’s film is one of the most original films on the subject of the Holocaust, as well as a powerful metaphor for everything that happens “on the other side of the fence” that we deliberately refuse to see.
