The Love That Remains spans a year in rural Iceland in which artist Anna and fisherman Magnus navigate the breakdown of their marriage while trying to maintain stability for the sake of their three children (incidentally played by director Pálmason’s three real-life children). Shot on 35mm film and imbued with naturalist and surreal imagery, the film captures the bittersweet essence of fading love and shared memories amidst the changing seasons. Playfully veering into comic and fantastical detours, Pálmason’s painfully honest, darkly humorous portrait is crafted with a deep understanding of the uniqueness of each family. The film premiered at Cannes, where the dog Panda won the Palm Dog Award.
