Jóhann Jóhannsson’s Last and First Men is a dystopian sci-fi elegy about a utopian society of superhumans who inhabited Earth for millennia, but whose society collapsed due to an astronomical event that caused a loss of telepathy. Narrated by Tilda Swinton and blending a minimalist music score by Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson and scenes of colossal Partisan monuments in Yugoslavia, the film tells the history of a vanished society. Filmed on 16mm film, devoid of people, the monuments to the Antifascist Struggle in Petrova Gora, Podgarić, Tjentište and elsewhere become the visual backdrop for an apocalyptic letter from the last people on Earth to their ancestors – a report on the human species sent into space by a probe. Based on British writer and philosopher Olaf Stapledon’s 1930 novel of the same name, the film contrasts the collapse of a utopian civilisation with the crumbling of the Yugoslav dream.
