After the tragic death of their daughter, a Swiss working-class family that rents, sells and repairs excavators tries to reestablish broken ties with each other in Piet Baumgartner’s impressive feature debut. The father finds solace in his work, in the choir (and its conductor), the mother sinks into grief, while the son dreams of escaping to the USA. Told in precisely composed shots, spanning four years and featuring the “dance of the excavators”, Baumgartner builds a compelling story about the process of healing, about the things we bury and rebuild, skillfully portraying the emotional complexities of the main characters and avoiding artificial stylisations. It won the New Directors Award in San Sebastián.
