The fictional small town of Bacurau faces sinister events following the death of its matriarch Carmelita, in this genre-blending film set in a near-future Brazil. The town’s residents discover that their community has been erased from maps, its water and phone service cut off and they are under attack from a group of mercenaries led by Michael, played by Udo Kier. The film is a unique blend of neo-Western, siege thriller, and dystopian sci-fi critiquing colonialism, racism, and political corruption in Brazil. The directors even opted for 50-year-old track-mounted cameras used in the making of 1960s and 1970s American and Italian westerns. Bacurau premiered in Cannes in 2019, winning the Jury Prize.
