Temple received the award for expanding cinematic expression, and Diklić for the half-century anniversary of his career.

Two film legends received honorary awards at this year’s Cinehill held in Gorski Kotar. The film festival paid tribute to Julien Temple and Bogdan Diklić.

In a packed Cinema on the Slope, celebrated British director Julien Temple was awarded the Maverick Award last night, devoted to brave filmmakers who expand the boundaries of cinematic expression.

“I can’t imagine a person more deserving of this award than the man who recorded the birth of an entire era on camera. Punk defined Julien Temple’s career, and he has given us films that make us ask questions”, said Milena Zajović, selector of the main program.

Accepting the award, Julien Temple said he likes the fact that it’s not a competitive award and it’s intended just for him. “I am a big fan of this festival. It has a similar energy to Glastonbury, the festival I made a film about. It’s so great that people hang out here and watch movies together.”

This rock documentary legend started his career in the 1970s, making films about punk pioneers and masters of provocation. The Clash, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Neil Young, Judas Priest, Depeche Mode, and even Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson are just some of the names we associate with Temple’s directorial work, from documentaries and feature films to music videos.

The day before, the audience greeted the regional acting star Bogdan Diklić, who is celebrating 50 years of working on film. The jubilee award was presented by Danilo Šerbedžija, president of the Croatian Filmmakers and Producers Association and a member of this year’s Cinehill main jury.

“When I was shooting my first film, 72 Days, Rade Šerbedžija received an urgent call from America to go work on a project there. After thinking about it, Rade said we shouldn’t worry because only Bogdan Diklić was irreplaceable in this film”, said Šerbedžija, inviting to the stage, as he stressed, his favourite actor in the region.

“I was the first guest of Motovun, and this year I also arrived as the first guest at Cinehill. I am proud to have endorsed the start of the Motovun Film Festival and Cinehill. I am fascinated by the fact that this moment will never happen again”, stressed Diklić.

In his fifty year long career, this versatile theatre, film and TV actor appeared in more than 200 roles in some of the most popular regional films, series and plays, and his friendship with the Motovun Film Festival started from the very beginning of the festival. Bogdan Diklić was the first guest who arrived at the Motovun Film Festival, on the occasion of the screening of the now cult black comedy Cabaret Balkan (1998) directed by Goran Paskaljević.

The festival ends tonight with the closing award ceremony and a screening of the film Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person by Canadian director Ariane Louis-Seize. The all-day program full of film screenings and conversations with festival guests will reach its zenith with a concert by the rock band Let 3 and festival DJs until the early morning.

Cinehill Festival is supported by the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the Tourist Boards of Kvarner and Gorski Kotar, the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, Croatian Forests and the City of Delnice.
