This July, Zagreb audiences once again have the opportunity to experience part of the unique Cinehill Festival’s atmosphere under the open skies. From Thursday 23 July to Saturday 25 July, Tuškanac Summer Cinema will host screenings of captivating film titles, in the presence of members of their film crews.
On Thursday, get ready for the Zagreb premiere of Our Father, a dark and tense drama which is a minority Croatian co-production. Director Goran Stanković will attend the screening and introduce his award-winning work in person. Based on true events, it offers a glimpse into a highly troubled and closed community: a monastery commune for the treatment of addiction. A powerful psychological thriller, it unflinchingly examines the boundaries of authority, faith, manipulation, and power.
Friday brings Honey Bunny, arriving straight from the Pula Film Festival where it scooped up the Grand Golden Arena. The screening of Igor Jelinović’s film will be made all the more interesting thanks to the attendance of the cast and crew, led by actresses Snježana Sinovčić Šiškov and Aleksandra Janković, who both took home Golden Arenas for their performances. This layered family drama follows Tonina, a sharp and enterprising woman who runs the family business and cares for her bedridden, dementia-stricken mother. Convinced she alone carries the burden of the family, Tonina secretly transfers the family home into her own name – a decision that brings years of suppressed conflict, jealousy, and old wounds bubbling to the surface.
Saturday, 25 July, at the Tuškanac Summer Cinema is reserved for Jack, an early work by German director and Oscar winner Edward Berger, this year’s Cinehill Guest of Honour and recipient of the Maverick Award. The film is a moving and shuddering piece of contemporary German social realism about a ten-year-old boy who takes charge of the household and his younger brother because his young and immature single mother is unable to cope with parenthood. When social services place him in a home and his mother fails to appear to collect him for the holidays, Jack escapes and sets off on a multi-day search for her through the streets of Berlin, taking his younger brother with him.
