Jagna is a young woman determined to lead life on her own terms, regardless of restrictions of the 19th-century Polish countryside – a place of gossip and long-running feuds held together by tradition and patriarchy. When Jagna finds herself caught between the conflicting passions of a rich landowner, his son and other men, her resistance will lead to tragic consequences. The authors of the award-winning Loving Vincent (2017) return with a superb animated work that pushes the boundaries of the medium. The Peasants was first filmed with actors, and then over a hundred professional painters from Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania and Serbia painted each scene in oil on canvas, creating more than 56 thousand paintings that make up this masterful animated production. The film was Poland’s 2024 Oscar contender.
