Teacher Marie is madly in love with the model Paul. But after three months of dating, Paul informs her that sex, except for procreation purposes, has come to an end. After all her attempts at physical intimacy hit a wall of Paul’s cold-blooded inflexibility, Marie embarks on a series of sexual encounters with other men, including the school principal Robert, who introduces her to the world of BDSM. Catherine Breillat, with her explicit sex scenes, blurs the line between pornography and art, advocating for a clear depiction of sexuality as an authentic expression of desire. The film provokes social norms regarding female sexuality and love, and the most shocking moment is not the act of bondage, but the cold hospital scene that dissects institutionalized violence against the female body.
