Hirayamu seemingly enjoys the simple life working as a public toilet cleaner in Tokyo. He has a perfectly structured work routine and takes pleasure in 60s and 70s music, reading, and photographing trees with his analogue camera. But a series of unexpected encounters gradually reveals details about his past. Wenders’ latest film is a deeply moving and poetic depiction of the beauty of the everyday world that surrounds us. It premiered in Cannes, receiving the Ecumenical Jury Award and earning Koji Yakusho the award for Best Actor. It was also nominated for the Palme d’Or and the Oscar for best international film.
