When their car breaks down, a family visits the mechanic Vahid, a former political prisoner, convinced that the driver is actually his former tormentor. This seemingly innocuous incident sets off an avalanche of events with increasingly grave repercussions. Renowned Iranian director Jafar Panahi explores the moral fissures opened by trauma in this tense, darkly humorous revenge thriller which has won him the Palme d’Or at Cannes. The depiction of social repression, women’s inequality, but also his deep humanism and humour in the portrayal of everyday life in Iran have brought Panahi the main awards at all the most prestigious festivals in the world, making him the subject of political censorship and being sanctioned by Iranian authorities. Panahi will receive the honorary Maverick Award at this year’s Cinehill.
