In the early 1970s Brazil faces increasing pressure from the military regime. Eunice and Rubens Paiva and their five children live a modest life by the beach, in a house where the doors are always open, providing a safe haven of warmth and humour against the pervasive repression. Based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s eponymous memoir, this historical drama follows Eunice Paiva (Fernanda Torres) as she seeks justice for her husband who is taken away by the military. Amidst the crumbling political situation, Eunice transforms into a determined activist, ready to confront the state apparatus. The film premiered in Venice, winning Best Screenplay and became the first Brazilian film in history to win an Oscar.
