Two sisters spend their summer holidays with their parents. Fifteen-year-old Elena is confident and flirty, unlike her younger sister Anaïs, who finds comfort from insecurity in food. Bored in a French coastal town, they meet Fernando, an Italian student who sets out to seduce Elena. Anaïs observes Elena’s casual summer romance from the sidelines, discovering her own sexuality, feelings of jealousy and maturation. The uncompromising coming-of-age drama Fat Girl has become one of the most famous films of French provocateur Catherine Breillat, with a penchant for exploring issues of female sexuality and adolescent desire in her films. The film won the Manfred Salzgeber Award at the Berlinale and the France Culture Award at Cannes in 2001.
