Early one morning, there is a murder-suicide at a jewellery store. This dark news story reveals the story of one man’s despair and humiliation in a world of social injustice. In this powerful slow-burn thriller from renowned director Jafar Panahi, based on a screenplay by Abbas Kiarostami, a pizza delivery man and war veteran rides his moped around Tehran, witnessing deep class divisions. After the owner of the jewellery store humiliates him and refuses to let him into the store, the man is gradually driven to the edge. Often described as Iranian Taxi Driver, Crimson Gold is a disturbing neorealist critique of a repressive society and the tragic fate of those it mercilessly tramples. The film won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize in Cannes in 2003.
