In a newborn desert not far from the Amazon, 65-year-old family matriarch Betânia tries to start a new life while the world ends. After her husband’s death, she is forced to return to her birthplace in Maranhão, known as the Brazilian Jamaica. Amid the collision of tradition and modernity, Betânia and her family fight to maintain their identity against environmental and socio-economic challenges. Premiering at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, Betânia earned nominations for the Panorama Audience Award and the GWFF Best First Feature Award.
