Fourteen-year-old Alice (Charlotte Alexandra) reluctantly goes to her parents’ house in the countryside to spend the summer holidays. In an attempt to escape boredom, she begins to explore her own sexuality with a worker from her father’s sawmill. The directorial debut of uncompromising French author Catherine Breillat was completed in 1976, but it was not shown for a full 25 years, primarily due to its explicit sexual content. Its raw and provocative depiction of adolescent female sexuality led to it being banned or deemed unsuitable for distribution in many countries, including France at the time. Despite, or perhaps because of the censorship, the film gained cult status and is regarded as a milestone in feminist cinema and one of the most provocative works in the coming-of-age genre.
