Over one hundred films screened during the festival, with almost as many distinguished festival guests \u2022 Audience numbers exceed last year\u2019s figures<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In the beautiful surroundings of Fu\u017eine and the festival\u2019s customarily informal atmosphere, with the traditional toast and awards ceremony, another edition of Cinehill<\/strong> has drawn to a successful close. Despite the cool weather of Gorski Kotar, this year\u2019s edition attracted more visitors than the previous year.<\/p>\n\n

After a week of patient viewing of titles in the official competitions \u2013 whose themes ranged from the hypocritical bureaucratisation of war and the uncertainties faced by younger generations in wealthy countries, to the importance of chosen families, maturity, and forgiveness \u2013 the festival juries carefully selected their winners. \nThe awarded works confirmed a preference for formally and narratively layered treatments of difficult subjects, and for the skilful interweaving of politics with intimate everyday life.<\/p>\n\n

The Main Competition jury awarded the Cinehill Propeller<\/strong> for best film to the intimate dramedy Flies<\/em><\/strong> by Mexican director Fernando Eimbcke<\/strong>. The jury noted that possessed of \u201ca cinematic vision, combining simplicity, boldness, and profound humanity\u201d, <\/em>Eimbcke had transformed a story about the unexpected friendship between the embittered, solitary Olga and a nine-year-old boy into \u201ca deeply universal reflection on loneliness, connection, compassion, and the acceptance of loss.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n

\u201cIn the current trend of closing borders and expelling immigrants, this film shows what happens when we open our hearts to one another just a little\u201d, said director Fernando Eimbcke in an emotional video message on the occasion of winning the main award.<\/p>\n\n

The Special Mention<\/strong> in the Main Program went to the feature comedy 15 and the Half<\/em><\/strong>, the directorial debut of well-known Montenegrin actor Milivoje Obradovi\u0107<\/strong>, praised for his \u201cwitty and intimate portrayal of an actor facing professional, existential, and personal crises\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

The CineCorto<\/strong> jury awarded the prize for best short film to L’avant-Poste 21<\/em><\/strong> by Swiss director Camille Surdez<\/strong>, citing the film\u2019s courageous, sensitive, and clear approach to the subject of abortion, \u201cdemanding an open and meaningful discussion\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

The CroCorto<\/strong> Prize for best Croatian short went to Remember That I Carry You<\/em><\/strong> by director Ana Predan<\/strong>, whose \u201cminimalist yet precise direction builds filmic poetry around two lonely souls who forge communication through the sea and water\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

The FIPRESCI<\/strong> jury awarded their prize to the drama The Meltdown<\/em><\/strong> by Chilean director Manuela Martelli<\/strong>, highlighting her subtle yet powerful cinematic language in this \u201cquiet, chamber-piece story about the multilayered relationship between mothers and daughters set against a backdrop of both social and individual corruption\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

\u201cI am extremely happy that this award comes from Croatia, a country I fell in love with while making the film <\/em>God Will Not Help\u201d,<\/em> said director Manuela Martelli in a video message.<\/p>\n\n

The evening concluded with a screening of Mother<\/em><\/strong>, Teona Strugar Mitevska<\/strong>\u2019s punk-spirited biography of Mother Teresa.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWhen you make a film, there can be frustration and anger, but that didn\u2019t happen with this project. We managed to make exactly the film we wanted \u2013 it was pure enjoyment and love\u201d, said Strugar Mitevska at the close of another Cinehill edition.<\/p>\n\n

Audiences will have the opportunity to see the award-winning and most acclaimed titles from this year\u2019s festival on Sunday, when the bust of director Kre\u0161o Golik \u2013 born precisely in this picturesque Gorski Kotar town \u2013 will be unveiled on the Fu\u017eine promenade. A special screening will also present archival film footage from the history of Gorski Kotar and Kvarner.

This year\u2019s edition offered over one hundred films and almost as many festival guests \u2013 directors, actors, producers, and artists \u2013 who took part in screenings, audience conversations, panels, and numerous side events over six festival days. Among them were Oscar-winning director Edward Berger and regional acting legend Zijah Sokolovi\u0107, both recipients of honorary Cinehill awards.

Also in attendance were numerous filmmakers from the program and leading regional film figures including directors Goran Markovi\u0107, Rajko Grli\u0107, Teona Strugar Mitevska, Damjan Kozole, Igor \u0160eregi, and Vinko Bre\u0161an, with a particularly sizeable delegation from Montenegro, this year\u2019s partner country.<\/p>\n\n

Cinehill was co-organised with the Municipality of Fu\u017eine and held with the support of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the Kvarner Tourist Board, and the Croatian Audiovisual Centre.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
