{"id":72185,"date":"2026-07-26T12:16:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-26T11:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/a-sovereign-gaze-of-a-small-cinema-with-big-stories\/"},"modified":"2026-07-26T12:16:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-26T11:16:17","slug":"a-sovereign-gaze-of-a-small-cinema-with-big-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/en\/a-sovereign-gaze-of-a-small-cinema-with-big-stories\/","title":{"rendered":"A Sovereign Gaze of a Small Cinema with Big Stories"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Visitors had the opportunity to attend the panel <strong>\u201cA Sovereign Gaze: Two Decades of Montenegrin Cinema\u201d<\/strong>, dedicated to the monograph of the same name and to Montenegro\u2019s cinematic journey from its independence in 2006 to the present day.<\/p>\n\n<p>Montenegro is this year\u2019s Cinehill partner country, and its filmmaking has been introduced to audiences through the program <strong><em>Mountain to Mountain<\/em><\/strong>, screening titles such as <a href=\"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/en\/film\/blue-2\/\"><strong><em>Blue<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/en\/film\/the-cow\/\"><strong><em>The Cow<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/en\/film\/black-trumpet\/\"><strong><em>Black Trumpet<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/en\/film\/vud-you-won\/\"><strong><em>Vud, You Won!<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/en\/film\/forever-hold-your-peace\/\"><strong><em>Forever Hold Your Peace<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/en\/film\/otter\/\"><strong><em>Otter<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/en\/film\/yugo-florida\/\"><strong><em>Yugo Florida<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>At the panel, visitors had the opportunity to hear more about the changes that have shaped the past two decades of Montenegrin cinema. The conversation featured monograph editor, film producer, researcher, and university professor <strong>Sanja Jovanovi\u0107<\/strong>; film director and producer <strong>Marija Perovi\u0107<\/strong>; writer, dramaturg, and screenwriter <strong>Stefan Bo\u0161kovi\u0107<\/strong>; and film director <strong>Bojan Stijovi\u0107<\/strong>.<br \/><br \/>In a moderated discussion and answering audience questions, they spoke about what has changed in Montenegrin cinema over the past two decades, what challenges filmmakers continue to face, and why watching films from across the border and from neighbouring countries matters.<\/p>\n\n<p>Sanja Jovanovi\u0107 explained that the title, A Sovereign Gaze, denotes an authentic view from within \u2013 the view of a country that no longer wishes to be merely a waypoint. The monograph traces the maturing of the Montenegrin film scene and its increasingly visible place in the region. &#13;\n\u201cAn independent eye, or more politically, a sovereign gaze, can in a first instance refer to Montenegro\u2019s sovereignty itself, but also to a view from within \u2013 the view of an independent country that no longer wishes to be on the margins of regional cinema, a waypoint, or mere scenery, but a strong small cinematography\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n\n<p>Visitors thus had the chance to take a peek behind the Montenegrin film screen \u2013 and to discover that there is a lot worth seeing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Visitors had the opportunity to attend the panel \u201cA Sovereign Gaze: Two Decades of Montenegrin Cinema\u201d, dedicated to the monograph of the same name and to Montenegro\u2019s cinematic journey from its independence in 2006 to the present day.
