{"id":71945,"date":"2026-07-25T18:09:32","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T17:09:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/half-a-century-of-letters-filmmaking-a-joint-book-by-rajko-grlic-goran-markovic\/"},"modified":"2026-07-25T20:00:05","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T19:00:05","slug":"half-a-century-of-letters-filmmaking-a-joint-book-by-rajko-grlic-goran-markovic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/en\/half-a-century-of-letters-filmmaking-a-joint-book-by-rajko-grlic-goran-markovic\/","title":{"rendered":"Half a Century of Letters &#038; Filmmaking: A Joint Book by Rajko Grli\u0107 &#038; Goran Markovi\u0107"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Friday 24 July, Rakov Jarak played host to the book launch of the joint project by cult directors <strong>Rajko Grli\u0107<\/strong> and <strong>Goran Markovi\u0107<\/strong> \u2013 a collection of five decades of letters, previously published on the Velike pri\u010de portal and recently bound and published by Telegram.<br \/><br \/><em>Did You Film This?<\/em> drew a full house, as one might expect since Grli\u0107 and Markovi\u0107, the respective directorial emblems of Zagreb and Belgrade, are canonical graduates of the Prague Film School, known for films that combine excellent screenwriting and abundant humour with an unflinching willingness to address the social, cultural, and political aberrations in the region.<br \/><br \/>The collection accordingly gathers more than half a century of candid, warm correspondence between two of the region\u2019s leading intellectuals on the enduring themes of their lives and work: cinema, the durability of friendship, departures and returns, politics, society, ageing, and memory.<br \/><br \/>In conversation with <strong>Silvana Men\u0111u\u0161i\u0107<\/strong> and Velike pri\u010de portal editor <strong>Veljko Lali\u0107<\/strong>, Grli\u0107 and Markovi\u0107 spoke not only about the themes in the collection, but about the intellectual and social impulses behind their respective approaches to filmmaking.<br \/><br \/>As their filmographies already suggest, both agreed that they make films about what they know and can portray with authenticity \u2013 the fact Markovi\u0107 used to ironically expound on his aversion to genre formulas in westerns and crime thrillers.<br \/><br \/>Despite more than 30 years of living and working in Ohio, in Grli\u0107\u2019s case, the same principle accounts for the fact that his films have always been built around the specific sociopolitical circumstances of Yugoslavia and Croatia.<br \/><br \/>As \u201cwitnesses to their time\u201d \u2013 the phrase used on the cover of this volume \u2013 they described the political situation in today\u2019s Serbia as worse than Croatia\u2019s corruption and party monopolism. Speaking freely, Markovi\u0107 likened the Serbian president and former prime minister to a juvenile delinquent who steals in order to buy the affection he is incapable of earning.<\/p>\n\n<p>Their reflections faithfully captured the character of this volume of collected letters, which address wars, family wounds, student uprisings, and immortal regimes with equal measures of tenderness and unflinching honesty.<br \/><br \/>Discussing the scenes he had been forced to cut from his films and his collaborations with screenwriters, Markovi\u0107 recalled with dry wit the instance when he was pressured to cut 40 minutes of the best scenes from <em>Special Education<\/em> to appease the audience tastes of the late 1970s.<br \/><br \/>Grli\u0107 then affirmed the value of constructive criticism and cautioned against the prevalence of egotism in the film industry.
