{"id":71190,"date":"2026-07-24T16:55:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T15:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/the-50-years-award-in-conversation-with-zijah-sokolovic\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T16:55:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T15:55:11","slug":"the-50-years-award-in-conversation-with-zijah-sokolovic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinehill.eu\/en\/the-50-years-award-in-conversation-with-zijah-sokolovic\/","title":{"rendered":"The 50 Years Award: In Conversation with Zijah Sokolovi\u0107"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The 50 Years Award \u2013 Cinehill\u2019s recognition for filmmakers who have dedicated half a century to the art of cinema \u2013 was presented to the cult Bosnian-Herzegovinian actor and director <strong>Zijah Sokolovi\u0107<\/strong> for his rich and eclectic body of work.<br \/><br \/>His conversation with <strong>Miroljub Vu\u010dkovi\u0107<\/strong>, a member of the International Federation of Film Critics, FIPRESCI, may have been driven indoors by a sudden downpour, to the intimate atmosphere of Kino Mak, but it no less intelligent, witty and good-humoured for it.<br \/><br \/>This year\u2019s mini-retrospective in Sokolovi\u0107\u2019s honour includes three titles \u2013 the short <em>The Charm of Bureaucracy <\/em>by Vefik Had\u017eismajlovi\u0107, specially restored for the occasion, <em>Jasmina<\/em> by Ned\u017ead Begovi\u0107, and <em>The Pavilion<\/em>, the darkly comic drama from 2024 by Dino Mustafi\u0107.<br \/><br \/>However, yesterday\u2019s conversation opened not with a film, but with Sokolovi\u0107 narrating the fairy tale of <em>The Wolf and the Seven Young Goats<\/em>. With characteristic wit, he noted that the widespread circulation of those fairy tales on audio tapes in the former Yugoslavia \u2013 over four million cassettes sold \u2013 had made his voice so recognisable that children and adults alike would refer to him simply as \u201cthe wolf from the seven goats\u201d.<br \/><br \/>Sokolovi\u0107 and Vu\u010dkovi\u0107 then turned to his acting journey, his sources of inspiration, and his celebrated 1978 one-man theatre piece <em>An Actor&#8230;Is an Actor&#8230;Is an Actor<\/em>, which he also performed at this year\u2019s festival.<br \/><br \/>We learned that the piece has become one of the longest-running and most frequently performed theatrical works in the territory of the former Yugoslavia. Sokolovi\u0107 explained that he wrote it as an act of creative rebellion and an exploration of the boundaries of theatre \u2013 a work that interrogates the very essence of an actor\u2019s vocation and the relationship between performer and fictional narrative.<br \/><br \/>Amid a wealth of anecdotes about the play\u2019s travels to Austria and the United States, Sokolovi\u0107 added that the show has been performed over 1600 times in dozens of countries across the world, and its text has been translated into numerous languages. Beyond the stage, <em>An Actor&#8230;Is an Actor&#8230;Is an Actor<\/em> also exists as a book.<\/p>\n\n<p>Sokolovi\u0107 and Vu\u010dkovi\u0107 addressed the challenges of acting and directing in a society in constant flux with equal wit. Following a self-deprecating comment about a film in which he played an Ustasha, Sokolovi\u0107 recalled that the film had been screened to troops during his military service, and that his commanding officer had told him it was perfectly acceptable for him to play an Ustasha \u2013 but not acceptable that he had put so much effort into it.<br \/><br \/>Sokolovi\u0107 explained his celebrated role in Rajko Grli\u0107\u2019s melodrama <em>You Love Only Once <\/em>by noting that Grli\u0107 had chosen him precisely because they always argued, and went on to describe the creative process of bringing a caricatured character to life as a fully rounded person constrained by the system.<br \/><br \/>Sokolovi\u0107 and Vu\u010dkovi\u0107 also discussed performing Chekhov\u2019s <em>The Bear<\/em> with orchestral accompaniment, and as the conversation drew to a close, it left the audience with a clear impression that the lifetime achievement award had been bestowed on exactly the right person.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 50 Years Award \u2013 Cinehill\u2019s recognition for filmmakers who have dedicated half a century to the art of cinema \u2013 was presented to the cult Bosnian-Herzegovinian actor and director Zijah Sokolovi\u0107 for his rich and eclectic body of work.
