On the occasion of the extraordinary commercial success of <em>The Wedding<\/em> \u2013 Igor \u0160eregi\u2019s unromantic tragicomedy, that became the most-watched Croatian film in history \u2013 our selector, novelist, and film critic <strong>Jurica Pavi\u010di\u0107<\/strong> sat down with leading figures in regional cinema.<br \/><br \/>The panel\u2019s diverse speakers included Croatian director <strong>Vinko Bre\u0161an<\/strong> \u2013 the author of what is now the second most-watched Croatian film, <em>How the War Started on My Island<\/em> and other political satires; Serbian producer <strong>Sne\u017eana van Houwelingen<\/strong>, whose credits include the acclaimed series <em>Operation Sabre<\/em> and <em>Mom and Dad Are Playing War<\/em>; Croatian director <strong>Igor \u0160eregi<\/strong>, who is already working on a sequel to his hit; Croatian producer <strong>Rea Raj\u010di\u0107<\/strong>, the producer behind the award-winning <em>Celebration<\/em> and this year\u2019s Pula Film Festival laureate <em>Honey Bunny<\/em>; <strong>Sanja Jovanovi\u0107<\/strong>, executive director of the Film Centre of Montenegro; Slovenian producer <strong>Ale\u0161 Pavlin<\/strong> \u2013 known for smash hits such as Dragan Bjelogrli\u0107\u2019s <em>Guardians of the Formula<\/em>, Hana Ju\u0161i\u0107\u2019s <em>God Will Not Help<\/em>, and the recent drama <em>Whites Wash at Ninety<\/em> by Marko Naber\u0161nik; as well as film critic <strong>Miroljub Vu\u010dkovi\u0107<\/strong> and HAVC director <strong>Chris Marcich<\/strong>.<br \/><br \/>Although the aim of the panel was to establish whether it is possible to sketch out a formula for a film guaranteed to win a wide audience, the participants used the similarities and differences between their respective works to discuss the subtle yet decisive characteristics of the regional film industry and its audiences.<\/p>\n\n<p>Since the panel was inspired by the success of the <em>The Wedding<\/em> \u2013 which had a special screening on the first day of the festival \u2013 \u0160eregi explained his decision to set the wedding between the daughter of a corrupt Slavonian businessman and the son of a blas\u00e9 Serbian minister on the Kvarner coast as a nod to Bre\u0161an\u2019s proven formula of situating politically charged comedies near the sea.<br \/><br \/>While sharing the impression that Adriatic comedies that blend dark humour with Croatian-Serbian relations are likely to find favour with domestic and regional audiences, Rea Raj\u010di\u0107 added that titles such as Igor Jelinovi\u0107\u2019s <em>Honey Bunny<\/em> \u2013 which has gained significant visibility thanks to its Pula victory and Dalmatian humour \u2013 are poorly served by being marketed in the same way as larger, more ambitious productions.<br \/><br \/>Van Houwelingen explained the Serbian audience\u2019s appetite for her work through the genre adaptation of <em>Operation Sabre<\/em>, the HBO mini-series about the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran \u0110in\u0111i\u0107, framed through the tropes of the thriller and crime drama; while Pavlin confirmed the readiness of both Slovenian and Serbian audiences for titles such as Bjelogrli\u0107\u2019s international smash hit <em>Guardians of the Formula<\/em>.<br \/><br \/>The conversation also addressed the growing recognition of actresses and actors on a film\u2019s commercial success in the wake of the streaming series boom, and Marcic, speaking from the perspective of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, affirmed the necessity of striking a balance between formal or thematic ambitions and the proven preferences of cinema audiences.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, Rakov Jarak hosted the first panel in Cinehill\u2019s rich program of discursive events.
