J\u00f3hann J\u00f3hannsson\u2019s <\/span>Last and First Men<\/span><\/i> is a dystopian sci-fi elegy about a utopian society of superhumans who inhabited Earth for millennia, but whose society collapsed due to an astronomical event that caused a loss of telepathy. Narrated by Tilda Swinton and blending a minimalist music score by Icelandic composer J\u00f3hann J\u00f3hannsson and scenes of colossal Partisan monuments in Yugoslavia, the film tells the history of a vanished society. Filmed on 16mm film, devoid of people, the monuments to the Antifascist Struggle in Petrova Gora, Podgari\u0107, Tjenti\u0161te and elsewhere become the visual backdrop for an apocalyptic letter from the last people on Earth to their ancestors \u2013 a report on the human species sent into space by a probe. Based on British writer and philosopher Olaf Stapledon\u2019s 1930 novel of the same name, the film contrasts the collapse of a utopian civilisation with the crumbling of the Yugoslav dream.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
